1 in 5 Americans Uses Herbal Medicine

We love our herbal medicine. We love formulating it, making it, and taking it. So do our patients! It is easy to take, comes with no side effects and is effective. It turns out, most of America likes their herbal medicine too!

Herbal medicine has been gaining popularity in the United States since the 1990s. Last year, the American Botanical Council (ABC) announced that U.S. consumers spent $7.4 billion on herbal supplements in 2016. Up almost 8% over the previous year.

What is fueling this surge in interest in botanical medicines? It turns out that multiple factors are at work:

Herbal Medicine has Scientific Basis

In many cases, modern researchers have found that traditional uses of certain botanicals have a scientific basis. Many drugs have been fashioned from these herbs. In 2017, as many as one-third of the drugs in current use are primarily derived from herbs. From an article published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine (JGIM) in 2008, there is “substantial scientific evidence” that garlic, ginkgo, garlic, St. John’s wort, soy, and kava work.

Here is what the researchers found:

  • Garlic: Lowers cholesterol levels by 4–6 percent.
  • Ginkgo: Effective for dementia. Provides relief from Alzheimer’s disease.
  • St. John’s wort: Likely effective for the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression.
  • Soy: Treats menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes. Lowers cholesterol.
  • Kava: Works as a sedative and relaxant. Assists people overcome anxiety.

The JGIM study is one of the many on herbal medicine. The U.S. National Library of Medicine has a long list of the herbs. Each herb has links to how the current scientific evidence stacks for or against each one.

Herbal Medicine Works

Herbal medicine has been in use for more than five millennia. Over these five thousand years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has figured out a way to prescribe herbs is a way that is safe, precise and effective. By creating combinations of herbs, rather than using single herb remedies, herbalists can use the side effects of herbs to counteract each other or to enhance each other to create the desired effect. Also, herbalists have found a way to diagnose the causes of a problem, at the environment that allowed it to arise, and to treat that cause, rather than just the symptoms. These approaches to medicine beget a precise treatment that is effective and without side effects.

Herbal Medicine Is Safe

Most herbal medicines are safe for consumption and provide therapeutic effects with fewer side effects than their pharmaceutical counterparts. An elegantly formulated herbal prescription tailored just for you will provide a precise therapeutic effect with very few if any, side effects.
However, there are herbs that are toxic, interact with drugs, or are contraindicated for some conditions such as pregnancy. Some herbs must be processed appropriately or combined with other herbs to make them safe. Some cannot be used with certain drugs or certain herbs, and yet others can be misued by the layperson. This is why finding a professional, trained herbalist to prescribe herbs is always a good idea. When properly prescribed, herbs can be a safe and effective remedy without the deleterious side effects many drugs have.
